The French Bulldog

January 30, 2013

This weekend I visited the proud parents of two French Bulldogs. I knew virtually nothing about the French Bulldog before meeting these two cutie pies. Oh my dog – ADORABLE.

Powerhouse Pup
Look at that stocky build! Tongue out! Happy face! This French Bulldog is so CUTE!

So much energy and slobber packed into a cute little bundle of power! One of the two was impossible to photograph – they were in constant motion. I just need to bask in the cute a little before I tell you more about this creature.

French Bulldog
That tongue! Always out, it seems. And those ears!

They’re so much smaller than I imagined. And more charisma than I thought the French Bulldog could have.

A little Orc-ish
Is it just me, or does this little guy look a we bit like the pale Orc in The Hobbit? But much cuter? I think it’s the ears. And the eyes. And the nose.

This little dog won me over. Not that I want a small dog, but if I had to have one, I might choose this breed. Let’s find out more about them before making a snap decision, shall we? One should never make snap decisions when bringing home a pet.

The AKC breed page tells me this:

Often described as “a clown in the cloak of a philosopher,” the French Bulldog originated as, and continues to be used as a companion dog. The breed is small and muscular with heavy bone structure, a smooth coat, a short face and trademark “bat” ears. Prized for their affectionate natures and even dispositions, they are generally active and alert, but not unduly boisterous. Frenchies can be brindle, fawn, white, and brindle and white.

The Frenchie I feature here is a white, and I believe its companion is a brindle. Yes, they’re small dogs, but the heavy, strong structure of the animal is immediately obvious. According to the AKC page, the also don’t like heat. Poor little dears.
My friend, Karen, of Storybook Kennel, who recently began raising French Bulldogs, says that the Frenchie is most definitely a clown. Frankly, this dog is a companion dog, meant to be with a people. You. They are sweet and protective, loving their people. The ones I met this weekend were slobbery, kissy messes. They wanted nothing more than to snuffle and be loved on, wiggles and all. So easy to fall in love with a French Bulldog!

French Bulldog
Jack, the French Bulldog, munches on a non-approved treat. Give that dog a Jones Natural Chew!

This adorable little guy, Jack, is one of Karen’s dogs. I believe he was her first French Bulldog. Isn’t he the cutest thing ever?
So what are the cons of owning a French Bulldog? Hm. Size can be detrimental, if you don’t like small dogs. They have short, sleek hair, which is nice.  I’m not saying I’ve found the dumb dog I was looking for, but they’re certainly not the smartest breed. Which, I’m hoping, means that they’re not as destructive as the smarter breeds, at least long-term.
Health-wise, the French Bulldog cannot tolerate heat. At all. I’ve read that many airlines have banned travel of these dogs because storage in heat while flying has killed so many. AIR CONDITIONING. And do not leave these little things outside in the heat. Ever.
More possible health conditions – knee caps dislocate, eye issues, difficulty in giving birth. But all dogs, full bred, are prone to health issues. Pick your breed, choose your health issue.
My point is, if you’re looking for a small, goofy dog to be the best companion EVER, choose the French Bulldog. And stock up on pig ears and bully sticks for the little guy. Because I said so. 😉
Until I write again …
