So There’s a Chicken in My Bathroom, Etc.

April 12, 2013

So there’s a chicken in my bathroom. It’s driving my dogs a little crazy. I thought y’all would want to know how Bon Bon is doing, yes?

Sleeping chicken
Bon Bon sound asleep on my bathroom floor

Yesterday she was sleeping all the time and it had me worried. I’ve never brought home a fully grown chicken. Desperate, I bought a honeydew melon and sliced off a piece for her (the other chickens and ducks got the rest). She ate little bits slowly in the late afternoon, but by nightfall it was completely gone.

So this morning, at a friend’s recommendation, I scrambled up an egg for her. She nibbled. Then she ate. In ten minutes the entire thing was gone! I’m about to scramble another egg for her (she’s terribly underweight) and will be picking up plain yogurt when I’m out later. Get some good probiotics in her gut.

Eggs are good protein, even for chickens
Bon Bon scarfed down the scrambled egg like a starving hen. Which she is.

Like I said, the dogs have been a little upset by all of this. First they get new chicks that they can’t play with or eat. Then we build the chicks another coop. Now there’s a chicken living in the downstairs bathroom. Their bathroom. With the toilet they love to drink from.

Speaking of the other coop and outside birds, the ducks have been acting kinda wonky. We have the two male ducks, Jimmy and his son Petey.  Jimmy is a year and a half old, and Petey is six months old. There is no female. Yesterday the two boys started fighting. Very much like watching two middle school girls fight, it was. I shot a little video before trying to break it up. Again.

It seems that spring is when male ducks become aggressive. I do remember last spring and Jimmy being very aggressive. It passes. I just hope they both live through this. I might have to separate the ducks. *sigh*

And the chicks! They’re growing like weeds! Lookit!

Rooster chick
Frodo, my Egyptian Fayoumi rooster, is cock of the walk

Hen chick
Jemima was enjoying a little time in the sun

Sprawling chick
Legolas is sprawling, like she’s in a recliner in front of the TV, waiting for me to bring her a burger and fries

The chicks crack me up. Watching them is so entertaining! Y’all, everyone should have backyard chickens. Seriously.

Lessee … while out and about yesterday, trying to find help for poor little Bon Bon, I met a cat. Yes, a cat.

Cat wearing a jacket
She is so tiny! And cute! *SQUEEE*

She’s so tiny! I have no idea what her name is. But I love her hoodie! And look at this purrrfect face!

Black and white cat at the feed store
What a sweetie!

So, in all my wanderings, I didn’t meet up with any dogs. I did ask the lady at the feed store if they could please start carrying Jones Natural Chews, since this feed store is MUCH closer to my house than the Atwoods. We have a lot of feed stores in Tulsa. Atwoods is the best, in my opinion, but I like to shop at the one close to me.

Y’all, have a great weekend! I’m sure there will be much more to talk about on Monday!

Until I write again …
