Not Even a Treat Will Do

June 30, 2015

I am the Queen of Treats. This Tasty Tuesday has me admitting that I’ve met a situation where not even a treat will do. And it involves my own dog.

Dog in repose
Gadget is so much fun to dress up. He’s tiny and cute and looks great in a feather boa.

The treats we’ve highlighted this month have been the Rocky’s Rollers. I try and have at least one of the featured treats in my purse at all times, since one never knows when one will need a treat. I had some Rollers in my purse yesterday when I took Gadget to the vet.

Waiting to be seen by the vet
Waiting at the vet, a little uncomfortable because a dog with parvo just left. I asked a ton of questions.

He travels so well. Loves the car. In fact, he flat out passes out in the car. I’m pretty sure it’s because his legs are so short that he can’t see out the window. And it’s pretty darn cute. At one point I placed my hand over his nose to make sure he was still breathing. He’s that chill.

Sleeping in the car
Let sleeping dogs lie. Did that saying come about because sleeping dogs sometimes appear to be dead?

And why were we at the vet? Gadget has been scratching his ears and biting his paws. Initially, the ears smelled awful. I thought they smelled kinda yeasty. So I took to making a raw apple cider vinegar dilute (one part ACV to three parts water) and dripping it into his ears, then massaging the ear canals from the outside. Next I dipped his wee paws into the mixture. It helped him tremendously and the itching stopped. For nearly a week. Then started again. So I did what any good dog mama would do and took him to the vet.

Turns out the ACV dilute helped him. The vet flushed his ears and checked the results. He had a very mild case of yeast, as well as a little bacteria. Nothing serious or severe. So the vet put some kind of two week drops in the ears and called it good. Nothing more to do. So why am I moaning that not even a treat will do? Gadget, my tiniest dog (at 12 chunky pounds), is a biter.

Give the patriotic dog a treat!
Gadget is a patriotic biter. Obviously. A cute patriotic biter. Who gets plenty of Jones Natural Chews. Because LOOK AT THAT FACE. How could I not?

Vicious little creature that he is, Gadget has a Napoleon complex. He wants to be top dog. And he doesn’t like things which are uncomfortable. So he bites. It’s the cutest thing ever, y’all. His mouth is so tiny that he doesn’t do much harm. Still. So our vet has a bottle of Cheez Whiz in every office, just for these things. Gadget wouldn’t take the Cheez Whiz. Thinking I knew best, I grabbed a little piece of a Jones Natural Chews Roller from my purse. Gadget wouldn’t even take that! Not even a treat will do when the vet tech is sticking a thermometer up the rear end, people.

In the end, the Cheez Whiz won the day. In fact, Gadget finished off the entire can. He’s a winsome thing. When the techs brought him back after the drops were administered, several of them came from the back room just to tell me how cute he is and how much they love him. All dog mamas love hearing that. Even if their dog is a traitor. Turning down a Roller. I can’t even …

Rocky's Roller treats from Jones are great for any size dog
Rocky’s Rollers, Beef! Yumm-o! These soft treats tear into smaller pieces, just right for tiny dogs. But not dogs who are having their temperature taken, evidently.

Y’all have a great Tasty Tuesday! And give your dog a Jones Natural Chew. I’m guessing that, unlike Gadget, your dog will scarf it down. And smile. Naturally.

Until I write again …
