Today’s guest post, talking about limited ingredient treats for dogs, is Jodi Stone, of Heart Like a Dog
Limited Ingredient Treats
I’m picky about the treats I give my dogs.
It’s not like I go into a store and pick up just any old treat. I read labels. Yes, you read that right, I actually read the labels.
Now I can’t speak for you, but when I read a label I like to actually be able to read it quickly and pronounce all the words.
- If the ingredient list is too long, I lose interest.
- If I pick up a beef and oat treat and the first ingredient isn’t beef, I lose interest.
- If I need a dictionary to figure out how to pronounce a word, I lose interest.
You get the idea.
My ideal treat is limited in ingredients, made in the US from US sourced/purchased product and it’s preferably a family run business.
Why I Choose Jones Natural Chews
Luckily for me, I started following this blog a few years back and I got meet the Fabulous Flea, who oh so wisely introduced me to the Jones Natural Chews line. A family run business who makes their treats right here in the good ole’ US of A from US products.
(The fact that she’s my friend is just the icing on the cake.)
I’m thrilled to be a guest blogger here and to be able to share with you one of my favorite treats that Jones makes.
It’s called Beef Liver Tender Taffy and here’s what I love about it.
The ingredients: Beef liver, water, glycerin, molasses, guar gum, salt. That’s it. Six ingredients, all pronounceable!
The texture: It’s soft, but chewy. Not as chewy as gummy bears, but not as sticky as real taffy. The dogs can do a bit of chewing, but nothing too strenuous. (I have a hard chewer and hard treats won’t work, because she makes her gums bleed.)
The size: Each tender taffy is 5 to 5 ½” long. When you combine the size with the texture, you get a treat that’s super versatile. I can either cut it into smaller bite sized pieces if I want to use it for training, OR I can use the whole stick for something spectacular!
The calories: Each stick is only 29.7 calories! If you’re watching your dog’s weight (who isn’t?) then you know you don’t want to go overboard in feeding high calorie treats.
In our house the dogs are required to sit/lie on their ‘place’ while we eat dinner. Just before we sit down, we give them each a stick of Taffy as a reward for being where they are supposed to be.
It’s a win-win. The dogs get a treat that’s healthy and wholesome with ingredients I don’t need to worry about, and the humans get to eat their meal in peace, with no begging from the four-leggers.
Dogs Love Them!
Of course, I can’t guarantee your pups won’t beg for more after they taste these yummy treats.
