Follow Up Friday

May 3, 2013

OMIGOODNESS. I can’t tell you how much I love this Follow Up Friday blog hop, co-hosted by Dog Daz and Heart Like a Dog! The purpose, I think, is simply to have a day to follow up on questions and comments left on posts during the week. I try to field those via email during the week, but am often far less than successful. Let’s jump!

Sad Beagle
Say hello to Belle, my friend’s 11 year old beagle. She was sad that I visited and didn’t bring a treat.

First, a couple of weeks ago I did an entire Funny Bone Monday about dogs playing dead. JoAnn, at Sand Spring Chesapeakes, Posted a video of her dog playing dead. Y’all go check it out. It made me laugh so hard! Listen for it, about halfway through.

Dog collage on Follow Up Friday
I call this The Many Faces of Patches. Yeah, I was bored.

Tuesday, on announcing the death of our new/old chicken, Taryn asks, “Sorry about Bon Bon….but what’s with feeding her scrambled eggs? Sounds sort of odd…..”

Barred Plymouth Rock
Bon Bon was supposed to be a young laying hen. I need to pay more attention when I buy a hen.

Chickens are cannibals. They are. They will eat their own eggs if they get a taste for them, so they need to be cooked for them. The protein is excellent for them. Chickens will also pick each other apart if there’s one in the flock who’s hurt and bleeding. Occasionally I give them the remains of a rotisseried chicken. They love it.

Emma sends this one out, regarding Jones Hoof – “Mom calls me a serial butt sniffer, so I bet I would love a hoof but I am wondering if you are also a butt sniffer since you know that they smell like butt??? Just a dog thought :)”

Chicken Butt!
GUESS WHAT?!?

Emma! I have two teenage boys! How on earth could I NOT know what butt smells like?! 😉 Moms of boys out there, back me up!

Taryn is batting a thousand this week. She asks, “Does duck poop make a good hair conditioner? ;-)”

Duck Commander
Petey is the original Duck Commander, commandeering a local redhead in order to survey his terrain.

Heh. No.

Gizmo asks, in regard to the fluffy feather photo two above, “What is that floofy thing? a chicken butt? laying an egg? Inquiring minds need to know”

Gizmo, that is Ginger’s rear end. Guess what? CHICKEN BUTT!!! I love that joke. Maybe internally I’m only five years old. It makes me laugh every time.

In regards to my chickens, Ann “Paws” Staub asks, ” I didn’t know they ate mice? Maybe I need chickens to get rid of these mice…”

Eating a bagel
“I swear, Ginger – if you take my bagel one more time, I am gonna thrash you.” Yes, chickens eat mice. They are also fond of bagels and cream cheese.

Yes, chickens eat mice. Probably not enough mice, since I can’t let mine free range all day anymore (hawks eat the hens if they’re not supervised), but they eat mice. I watched Mary Ann run around the yard for ten minutes carrying a mouse, being chased by Ginger. Eventually Ginger got the mouse away and ate it. They’ll eat small snakes, too. Anything that moves and will fit in their mouth. And yes, Ann, you need chickens.

Regarding my Rat Terrier post on Wednesday, Lindsay asks, since she’s thinking about adopting a smaller dog, “How do they compare to Jack Russell terriers?”

Rat Terrier
Sparky, the handsome Rat Terrier next door

OMD – I might have to do an entire post on that one. The short answer is, I found information here, and it’s body size and shape, wiry versus smooth coat, ear types, colors, personalities. Holy smokes. There’s a lot, even though I couldn’t pick either one out a line-up. We’ll go there someday, but I hope the link helps!

I think I’m really going to like this Friday blog hop. Thank you, Dog Daz and Heart Like a Dog, for sponsoring this!

Until I write again …
