IF YOU HAVEN’T ALREADY COMMENTED ON TUESDAY’S GIVEAWAY POST, DO IT NOW! TONIGHT IS THE DEADLINE!!
My apologies for not posting yesterday. I’m playing the migraine card. And the Petey card. I did something brutally hard on Tuesday – I took Petey the duck to a new home. One of the hardest things in life is finding new homes for loved pets. And I did it. And I cried.
Why did I give Petey up? Jim is my first duck, my birthday duck, and Petey’s dad. Since Roger Ann’s untimely death late last summer, Jim has taken to abusing Petey. It got so bad, lately, that Petey was missing feathers on the back of his head and neck.
Jim and Petey both were given to attacking the dogs. And harassing the hens. We built a coop just for those two drakes. It wasn’t enough. I concluded that two male ducks and no females made for very poor bedfellows. It came down to choosing between Jim and Petey. And it about broke my heart.
Have you ever had to find a home for a pet you loved? Did it about kill you? How did you do it? Did you cry and cry?
I did.
But I found a good home for Petey. He’s out in the country on ten acres, living with goats …
and chickens …
and dogs.
Fortunately, I had a bag o’treats in my purse and was able to make the dogs drool and beg for Big Paw Jerky.
I heard from Petey’s new mama this morning. He’s adjusting well. She mostly sits and looks at him while he talks to her. Petey’s a big talker. I told her to get him some coconut to shut him up. 🙂 She also said that he’s made friends with the chickens. I think they’re plotting some kind of global domination.
So? Have you ever given up a pet that you love? Found it a new home? I’m not here giving advice today. I want to hear your stories. Our rabbit, Humperdink, is just such a case. His previous owner wasn’t home enough to let Humpy have free reign in the house. It nearly broke her heart to rehome him. I text her photos at least once a week. Photos like this one:

So tell me your story if you have one. And if you haven’t already commented on Tuesday’s giveaway, GO DO IT NOW!
Until I write again …
