My Dogs Hate Rain
Can I just tell you how much my dogs hate rain? Some dogs love it. Some dogs love getting wet, playing in puddles, catching the rain in their mouths as it falls. Not my dogs. My dogs hate rain.
When we lived in Florida it was a different story. Rain fell from the sky without making a production of it. Oh sure, we had thunder storms, but we also had a lot of rain without the light show and noise. Rain didn’t feel the need to announce itself. Rain was pretty secure in who and what it was. Rain didn’t need the theatrics. Not that I miss Florida.
Not so here in Quakenado country, Tulsa, Oklahoma. All rain comes with its own light show. Like a fun laser show on steroids. And my dogs hate it. The thunder boomers. The bright flashes of certain death. I’m not gonna lie – I love it. Weather is one of the most exciting forms of entertainment there is. Right? So right now Mother Nature is putting on the show to end all shows, I have front row seats, and the poor dogs are pacing and panting, with the little dogs quaking and whining just a bit. Sorry creatures can’t appreciate good theater.
But Why Do They Hate It So?
I’ll tell you why my dogs hate rain. (Oh my – did you hear that thunder clap? My lights might go out any minute now.) Three things that I’m aware of:
- The barometric pressure changes when a storm rolls in, causing my senior dogs’ joints to ache, just like an elderly person whose joints let them know a storm is on the way. Thus the pacing and panting, poor dears. That’s why God made Windees from Jones Natural Chews (high in glucosamine and chondroitin), and good joint supplements.
- Noise – Flash and Patches have always been afraid of loud noises. My last Aussie was, too. Most noises don’t bother their half deaf selves anymore, but thunder can be pretty darn loud. I truly should invest in Thunder Shirts for my babies. The noise startles the lap dogs, too.
- The light show – all four dogs jump when a lightning bolt strikes, before the noise. They’re bright.
So not only do my dogs hate rain, they pretty much hate spring. Spring is when we get thunder boomers here in Tulsa. Lots and lots of thunder boomers. Thankfully, spring is just a season and doesn’t last all year long. Hopefully these April showers will pass when April does.
