Black Lab vs. Beef Shank Bone

July 21, 2015

Good day! I met the sweetest Black Lab this weekend, Chance, as in second chance. It was a knockdown, drag-out fight between Chance the Black Lab and the Beef Shank Bone from Jones Natural Chews. Y’all say hi to Chance.

Chance the Black Lab
Chance the Black Lab met his first Jones Natural Chews this weekend. He was an instant fan. Naturally.

Chance is a big boy with a strong jaw. The Beef Shank Bone is the perfect fit. I walked in the house and his nose went straight for my purse, entire rear end wagging like crazy. As in any new dog situation, I try to lead with a treat while explaining my treat philosophy to the owners, as well as the Jones history. Makes for a lot of rushed talking on my part. Went a little something like this.

Black Lab takes a brief break from gnawing a Beef Shank Bone
“I’m giving Chance a Beef Shank Bone. Jones treats are all natural and 100% grown and produced in the USA. This particular bone is from the front or hind leg of an American cow and is the sturdiest bone which Jones sells. It’s got meaty bits clinging to it.”

And breathe. Which is what Chance is doing in this photo. He’d been chewing non-stop for about ten minutes and took a break. Chance’s dad said he’d been very well trained and wouldn’t take a treat from anyone’s hand without waiting and being given permission. Heh. Chance grabbed the bone from my hand pretty much immediately. Dogs know.

That Beef Shank Bone is yummy
“Bones – any bones, whether baked or raw – have the potential to splinter. I advise everyone giving dogs a bone to know their dog’s chewing strength and to monitor the dog with the bone. If the bone splinters, throw away the splinters. Just keep an eye on your dog like you would a kid with candy or treats.”

Chance seriously got into this Beef Shank Bone. Seriously. I sat on the floor with my phone, snapping photos, talking to his mom and dad. He just gnawed. I’ll be telling a little more of Chance’s story tomorrow, as well as his parents’. It’s a good story.

Beef Shank Bone makes this Black Lab happy
“With a dog this size (about 135 pounds), you only want to give the sturdiest bones, the Beef Shank Bone being the sturdiest. What you don’t want is for the dog to chew up the bone. Bones are meant for gnawing, for a dog’s dental health and to pacify, not for consumption. Chewing a bone to splinters sometimes leads to sharp bits in the intestines, which leads to surgery and sometimes death. Just monitor to make sure the bone and the dog are a good match.”

Chance is really an amazing creature. He’s sweet, calm, perfect for the family he’s with. And he discovered a latent love of Jones Natural Chews.

Making dogs smile. Naturally.
“The Jones siblings started life as butchers, so they know meat. In fact, many of their treats are single ingredient treats, bones and meat. The rest have very few ingredients and are nearly all meat. And they make dogs smile. Naturally.”

I’d say we gained a convert. I left one very happy dog with a bone and a handful of yummy Jones Natural Chews treats. Good has been done here. Because Jones makes dogs smile. Naturally.

Until I write again …

P.S. If you know anything at all about treating dogs with seasonal and environmental allergies, please pop over to my mom’s blog and help her out? Thanks!
