3 Things Your Dog Doesn’t Tell You
- Dogs don’t care where they come from. It’s true. Dogs don’t care if they’re northern or southern, eastern or western, purebred or mutt, breeder or rescue, from another country, from someone’s backyard. Dogs just don’t care. Here’s what dogs do care about:
A) Having enough food
B) Having enough time with you
C) Warm, dry place to stay
D) Treats, specifically Jones Natural Chews 😉
E) A job to do, or getting enough exercise
F) Not having fleas or skin issues (mange, hot spots, etc.)
2. Dogs don’t want you coming straight at their face. Especially small dogs, but this is true of most dogs. They don’t appreciate some giant hovering over them and putting a big paw on their face or head. It can be intimidating or threatening if it’s a stranger. Here’s what dogs appreciate instead:
A) Let the dog come to you first
B) Get on the dog’s level if you can, or allow the dog to come to yours (little dog on a couch)
C) Present the back of your hand for sniffing before petting if you don’t know the dog
D) Better yet, talk to the other humans while the dog sniffs you and gets to know the other creatures in your life
E) Pet under the ears or chin, the back between the shoulder blades or rear end, unless the human tells you otherwise
3. Dogs don’t care what they eat nearly as much as you do. My dogs eat duck and chicken poo. There. I said it. But I feed them the good stuff. The Honest Kitchen for the small dogs. Pricey kibble which has meat as the first two ingredients for the big dogs. Jones Natural Chews for their treats, since they’re 100% all natural and 100% grown and produced in the USA. I care about what they eat. But the dogs? They don’t care. Not one bit. Here’s what they care about:
A) Dogs care about being fed on schedule
B) Dogs care about having enough to eat, but that doesn’t mean you should let them eat as much as they want – they’re like toddlers who need someone to monitor their intake
C) Dogs care about having yummy treats when they work for them, rewarding them for their effort, just like humans do – or some other reward which is important to them
